WANSTEAD HOUSE Community Centre is a recently refurbished, imposing Victorian house.
There are 12 rooms in the house and a purpose-built hall in the back.
The house has a new modern kitchen, a bar and a lift and toilets for the disabled.
The character of the house has been preserved by sensitively maintaining historic features such as the oak panelling on the ground floor which has been stripped down and restored in its original splendour.
Now owned and leased out by Redbridge Council, Wanstead House was officially opened as a community centre in 1946. Originally built in 1914 under the name Ranceval, the house was bought by Miss Margaret Meakings Johnson in 1920.
Well known for her involvement in local affairs, Miss Meakings Johnson entertained notable dignitaries including Mr and Mrs Churchill. Following her death in December 1940, the house was requisitioned by the Army and it was over a year before the association was able finally to take possession.
