Gilda has fled from the Duke’s chamber, and at Rigoletto’s request, relates the events of the day. The youth who followed her from Church declared his love for her and then left. Believing he was a poor student, her heart opened, but then she was kidnapped and brought here to her ruin. Her father bids her dry her tears, and she is comforted by his compassion.

A moving duet, tender for Rigoletto and dramatic for Gilda as she relives her fluctuating emotions. Gilda sings from low E to high Bb, Rigoletto from C to high F. The duet lasts 7 minutes.
