Monterone, the originator of the curse, realises that neither heaven nor hell can touch the Duke, and so releases him from the malediction. Rigoletto, in a rage, swears vengeance on the Duke. The hour is nigh, and his one hope is to punish the man. Gilda begs Rigoletto to forgive the Duke, although she does not tell him how much she loves the man who showed no mercy.

A fast and furious duet with flurries of triplet quavers in each phrase. Both vocal lines sit high, with touched Gs and an possible sustained high Ab for Rigoletto. The duet lasts 2 minutes.
