The reunion between Romilda and Arsamene is interrupted by the arrival of Serse. While Arsamene hides, Serse once more offers Romilda the chance to become his queen. Romilda refuses, but Serse issues veiled threats, and in order to save her lover, she agrees to abide by her father's wishes. Serse is overjoyed, and rushes away to seek Ariodate's blessing. As he leaves, he promises that he will return to her with his future happiness secured. Like a moth to the flame he will return, and if his wings are scorched, like a phoenix he will rise again.

A joyous love song for mezzo. The tessitura sits in the middle upper range (B to E) with sustained high G#s and one high A. The semiquaver figures are short and compact with few unexpected leaps, and a number of phrases simply weaving around one note. The accompaniment is filled with perky string chords and short phrases echoing the vocal line. Make sure to sing the D naturals accurately in the middle section - it is easy to insert D#s by mistake.

Serse is overjoyed at this, the first sign of Romilda's agreement, and is apparently unaware that it is due to a direct threat.
