Romilda has arrived to discover Serse with a letter from Arsamene. He tells her that the love letter has been written to her sister Atalanta. Romilda is distraught, and swears to weep for the rest of her life. When Serse asks her if she still loves Arsamene, she responds that she shall love him even though he has betrayed her.

A poignant and still duet. The lines alternate, and the short, slow-moving phrases cover a wide range. Romilda sings from low E to high G, Serse from low B to upper E. With the recitative, the duet lasts 1½ minutes.
