Serse has decided that Romilda will sit beside him at the court as a courtesan or as a wife. He orders Arsamene to let her know, but when Arsamene hesitates, determines to tell her himself. Arsamene knows that Romilda will not listen to Serse and that she belongs to him.

An unusual duet in that the two characters do not sing together - Serse exits before Arsamene sings allowing the same music to be used for both viewpoints. The major key and short phrases give a definite, powerful feel, and both singers cover the same range - low D to high G.
