Serse and Amastre, oblivious to each other's presence, lament their fate on opposite sides of the square. When the heart knows that it has been spurned, and its hopes have been betrayed, then the soul has been truly scorned. Jealousy is an unbearable emotion.

A tormented duet for mezzo and contralto. An unusual duet for Handel in that the characters are not aware of each other. The heavy dotted rhythms in the orchestra and use of open strings gives the piece its hopeless feel. Serse sings from G to G, Amastre sings from D to D.

The duet lasts 1½ minutes.
