Rigoletto is greeted with affection by his daughter Gilda, who asks him to reveal his (and her) family name. He refuses, but she asks to know more about her mother, their family, his friends. But Rigoletto cannot bring himself to talk, except to say that her mother was a beautiful woman who took pity on a poor cripple before she died.

A stimulated recitative is followed by a moving duet in 3/4, where Rigoletto’s dotted rhythms are contrasted with Gilda’s triplet semiquavers. In concert, end at the five Db chords before “Già da tre lune”. This duet lasts 5 minutes.
