Atalanta has obtained Arsamene's letter to Romilda. As she reads it, Serse appears in the square. Romilda continues to refuse him, and he cannot bear the pain of rejection. It is too much to endure the torment of loving such a beautiful, cruel woman.

A slow and tormented arioso for mezzo. The lack of orchestration, the sparse continuo accompaniment (cello and harpsichord) and the stark dotted rhythms in the cello line lend a forlorn air to this piece. The vocal line covers just an octave (F - F), yet almost every phrase covers that entire octave as Serse abandons himself to his despair.
