Macbeth

Macbeth and Banco meet three covens of witches on the heath. They foretell that Macbeth, Thane of Glamis, will become Thane of Cawdor and later king, and Banco will have descendants as kings. A message arrives from King Duncan: the current Thane of Cawdor is to be beheaded - Macbeth is now Thane of Cawdor. Macbeth is astonished and uneasy at the witches' prophecy. Banco is wary of Macbeth's pride.

A thoughtful and stirring duet. The vocal writing moves in counterpoint, linking only at the end. Macbeth covers a minor 9th (E to F), Banco sings from low F to Db. The duet lasts 3½ minutes.
