Rigoletto refuses to tell Gilda about her family or her status. He is worried that Gilda will be abducted by the Duke, and impresses on Giovanni that she must guard his beautiful flower. But while he examines the street, the Duke slips in, silencing Giovanna with a purse.

A delicate and moving duet. Rigoletto sings a smooth step-wise legato line, highlighted by individual accents (Bb to high F). At first Gilda sings Rigoletto’s music, but her writing changes to staccato and marcato intervals climbing to high C. In concert, begin at “Già da tre lune”. The duet lasts 5 minutes.
