RACHEL CHAPMAN's musical education began at the age of 5. At 16 she became a Music Scholar at Oakham School and in 1991 won the National Chamber Music for Schools competition in St John’s Smith Square. Rachel gained a Bachelor of Music Hons Degree at Manchester University. She undertook further training with English National Opera on “The Knack” programme. She currently studies with Russell Smythe. Rachel has taken masterclasses with many distinguished musicians including Malcolm Martineau, Enzo Ferrari, Kathyrn Harries and Thomas Helmsley.

Rachel's operatic experience is extensive and she has worked for such UK companies as Royal Opera House, Covent Garden; Opera North; Almeida Opera; Grange Park Opera; Pavilion Opera; Dartington Festival Opera; Carl Rosa Opera; Riverside Opera and Surrey Opera. Her roles include: Adina L’Elisir d’amore, Angelica Handel’s Orlando, Bianca La Rondine, Donna Anna Don Giovanni, Mabel The Pirates of Penzance, Micaela Carmen, Susan The Dinner Engagement, Susanna Le Nozze di Figaro, Vixen Sharp-Ears The Cunning Little Vixen and Zerlina Don Giovanni.

Rachel is distinguished as an interpreter of contemporary opera and music theatre and has performed the world premieres of Langer’s The Girl of Sand (Almeida Opera) and of Maazel’s 1984 (Royal Opera House). She has sung under the baton of Mark Elder, Ivan Fischer, Valery Gergiev, Philippe Jordan, Lorin Maazel, Paul McCreesh, Antonio Pappano, David Parry, Trevor Pinnock and Barry Wordsworth.

Rachel is equally at home on the concert platform. She has performed much of the standard repertoire and recent engagements include Bach’s St John’s Passion, Brahms’ Requiem, Handel’s Messiah, Haydn's Creation and The Seasons, Mendelssohn's Elijah, Monteverdi's Vespers, Mozart's Mass in C Minor and Poulenc’s Gloria. She also recently made her debut with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment in Bach’s St Matthew Passion in Bruges. She has performed in such leading venues as: Southwark Cathedral; Ripon Cathedral; Christchurch Cathedral, Dublin; in London: the Barbican, St John Smith’s Square, the Royal Albert Hall, the London Coliseum, the Royal Festival and Queen Elizabeth Halls, St Martin-in-the-Fields and the Cadogan Hall. She has worked with The Gabrieli Consort, The English Concert, London Voices and recorded for Opera Rara and Chandos Opera in English.
