JONATHAN BARRY was a choral scholar at Cambridge and went on to study with Walter Gruner at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. He later studied with Otakar Kraus, and Sir Peter Pears at the Britten-Pears School for Advanced Musical Studies. He returned to Aldeburgh in 1990 to sing
the title role in Verdi's 'Falstaff conducted by Steuart Bedford.
In 1981, after several years as a freelance baritone, he went to Italy where he studied with Mino Campanino and Marika Rizzo. In 1984 he was founder member of the Baroque group
'La Pieta dei T urchini' and also began working with Roberto
de Simone, with world premieres of de Simone's 'Stabat Mater'
with Irene Papas, (San Carlo and New York 1986/7) and 'Requiem for Pier Paolo Pasolini' (San Carlo 1987) and 'The Mystery and Trial of Joan of Arc' (Teatro Verdi, Pisa 1987).
In 1987 he won a long term contract with the San Carlo Theatre, and has since sung as soloist and chorister. His roles include Bartolo, Falstaff, The Count, Schaunard, Don Magnifico. He has also performed as a concert artist in almost every Italian city.
In 1998 he created the Vox Lirika Association, with the intention of offering performing space to young artists. He is the principal conductor and producer. Their first opera 'La Cenerentola' with Giacinta Nicotra in the tide role led to engagements on Capri and also for the San Carlo Theatre, as well as minor theatres in the South of Italy. In 1999 the group offered 'Fidelia' and
'Le Nozze di Figaro'. With 'Figaro' they opened the summer season in the Ravello gardens in 2000, and went on to Capri and Pignataro Maggiore.
The next opera 'L'Elisir d'Amore' saw Walter Omaggio as Nemorino, and the production was seen at the Villa Axel Munthe, Capri for the series of summer concerts. Their most recent opera has been a modem dress performance of 'Falstaff' for the Verdi centenary.
The Vox Lirika Association has also performed 'Das Lied von der Erde' (in the Schoenberg/Riehn transcription) for the Lutheran Church, Naples in conjunction with the Goethe Institute.
As a teacher, Jonathan Barry has coached Giacinta Nicotra who went on to win the Spoleto International Competition in 1999; Gianvito Ribba, winner of the Toti del Monte International competition 1999; Walter Omaggio, winner of the Spoleto and Philadelphia competitions; and
Marco Cristarella Orestano, winner of the Rumanian International Singing Competition 200l. Since 2003, Jonathan Barry has been resident in the UK.
The Vox Lirika group also has a base in the UK, and is registered as a limited company with charity status. In 2003, the company performed Rossini's 'La Cenerentola' in London to critical acclaim, and will have 'L' Elisir d' Amore' and 'La Traviata' in repertory in 2004. Other tides to be performed are: Falstaff, Fidelio, Le Nozze di Figaro, Don Pasquale, Carmen.
